Teaching Philosophy

My educational philosophy stresses excellence in teaching and research, the importance of practical approaches that put academic theory into action, and ethical responsibility in the practice of our profession. I view myself as an individual involved in building futures for students and as a helper who has a solid understanding of the subject matter rather than as an expert who knows all the answers. My role as a facilitator of educational experiences is to assist students in becoming productive and responsible citizens, in developing successful business-related careers, and in providing interested students with the intellectual depth necessary to pursue advanced studies. I recognize that a university has numerous stakeholders in addition to students, and believe that service to faculty and staff in other departments, parents, alumni, donors, and local community and regional organizations should be fostered and rewarded. I believe in the importance of having a friendly and collegial milieu and in providing mentoring relationships with students as they establish their professional and personal identities. I value and encourage an easy accessibility and genuinely friendly interaction between faculty and students and a rigorous, quality education that combines the theoretical with the practical through lectures, case studies, flexible short-term study groups, term papers, and other individual and group projects. Teamwork and collaboration are important to me.
