Required Text: Microsoft Office 2010, Volume 1, Grauer, with myitlab code

Required Software/Hardware: None, R115 computers have all the software.

 

 

Microsoft Office 2010, must include Access, Excel, Word, and Powerpoint

 

Methods of instruction:    Lecture, lab, Blackboard

 

Course description:           This course introduces the use of the computer in a business setting. Office applications, the use of the Internet, and searching online database are introduced and discussed. Applications included word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics programs. Students will learn to use the applications to analyze and solve basic business problems.

Course Objectives:             After completing the course the student will be able to:

                                                Access the Internet and use the browse, search, and hyperlink capabilities of Web browsers.

                                                Manage, and print documents using word processing software, including sending attachments with email.

                                                Create, design, and produce professional business documents using basic word processing and spreadsheet software.

                                                Use a problem solving process to solve quantitative problems with spreadsheet software.

                                                Apply fundamental spreadsheet skills to problem solving.

                                                Solve problems with statistical analysis tools in a spreadsheet.

                                                Apply spreadsheet logic operators in decision making.

                                                Retrieve data for computation, analysis, and reference.

                                                Organize data for effective analysis.

                                                Understand and create Tables

                                                Normalize Data

                                                Maintain and Secure a Database

                                                Create Queries

                                                Collect data with Forms

                                                Develop Reports

 

This course meets the university's general education requirements for computer proficiency.

Expectations for Communications:

Email Address – You are required to use your SOSU student email address..  In addition, you are required to REGULARLY check your SOSU student email account.  All email correspondence will be sent to your SOSU student email address.  Refer to the Blackboard login page for details about your SOSU student email address.  Be sure to include the course title in the subject line(BIM1553) and your name in the body of every email you send to me. 

 

Course Schedule: Assignments are make each Monday and are due the next Monday by midnight. Tests are announced at least one week in advance.

 

Course Policies: The weekly assignments are scored by myitlab.   No makeup examinations are given.  Perfect participation counts as one 100-point exam score.  Each absence lowers this exam score by 5 points.  Students must take all exams including the comprehensive final.  The lowest exam score (excluding the final and the attendance exam score) will be dropped at the end of the course.

 

 

This syllabus should not be construed as a contract between the student and the Instructor.  It may be changed at any time as needed in order to meet the instructional goals and needs of the class, including changes in the grading policy described above.  Students will be notified if such adjustments need to be made.

 

All assignments must be turned in by the due date.
